Hi Howard, how are things going? No, 4 AAs, so that would be 6 jolts - but still, a gel cell or something like that is a good idea for long-term out-in-the-field stuff, thanks. I suspect that the orig batteries that came with mine were not up to par for whatever reason and yesterday bought 4 NiMH Duracells and a 6-hour charger at Best Buy for $27.99... gonna try those and see what they do. Will keep ya posted. Best wishes!
Regards,
Doug

If they are not it really doesn't matter - you could get a voltage reducer cable at the RAT-SHACK - Either way - most good battery supply stores sell a small 12v gel cell - has plenty of capacity - just attach a couple of leads from your radio to the battery... The battery can ride on your belt in a big fanny pack or if you make the lead long enough in a knap-sack...73's Howard W3CQH - Busy getting a Bone Marrow Transplant and sry I can't join the fun on 1-20

Granted, I do have it set so that the backlight comes on whenever it receives a transmission, and haven't tried it without this setting, but it also seems to take a long time to fully recharge - like 24 hours. It's done this since it was new (not sure how long I've had it now, I guess more than 6 months but less than a year).

I'm going to try to pick up another set this weekend... I think they are lithium, but not sure.
