Using the Win500 software, I couldn't get it to work with the serial cable
that I used for Win96 and my Pro96. So I went to Radio Shack and got the
Programming Cable & Driver Software package (Part No. 20-047) for $32.99.

That consists of a USB cable, a circuit board spliced into the cable and
enclosed in a plastic box, and the 1/8" connector for the side of the
receiver, plus a CD with driver software for recent versions of Windows.

The instructions tell you NOT to let Windows install is generic driver. I
plugged the cable into the computer, Windows XP detected it and wanted to
install its own driver. I told it to forget that and had it search the CD
for a driver. It found the XP 32-bit driver and I told it to install it,
which it did.

Device Manager confirmed the installation was successful and told me the
new USB hardware was on COM6. I went to Configuration on Win500 and told
it to use COM6 to communicate with the receiver. Then I used its "Find
(receiver) Serial Port" feature (also in Configuration) to let it find the
Pro106. It found it instantly and I've had no trouble programming the
receiver.
