Officer-Involved Shooting in Silver Spring

                 Montgomery
County Police Detectives from the Major Crimes Division and the 3rd
District Investigative Section are investigating an officer-involved
shooting that occurred this afternoon at the 9100 block of September
Lane in Silver Spring.

Today at approximately 1:23 p.m., 3rd
District officers were in the area of New Hampshire Avenue and
University Boulevard participating in the Multi-Jurisdictional Holiday
Pedestrian Safety Initiative. A Montgomery County Police officer
located a vehicle speeding on University Boulevard. The officer
attempted to pull the vehicle over. The suspect vehicle pulled into and
stopped at the 9100 block of September Lane. When the officer got out
of the cruiser and approached, the suspect fled in the vehicle down
September Lane through a residential area. The suspect made a u-turn
and drove the vehicle at a high rate of speed toward the officer. The
officer shot at the vehicle, firing multiple rounds. The driver of the
vehicle fled toward University Boulevard in an unknown direction.
Officer Francis McDonough, who has been a member of the department for
14 years, was not injured.

The suspect is described as a black
male with short black or gray hair. He was driving a gold or
silver-colored Toyota Highlander or similar type of SUV with possible
Maryland tags. The vehicle may have one or more windows broken out.
Detectives believe the vehicle was struck by the officer’s rounds along
the passenger side and rear areas of the vehicle. The rounds caused the
vehicle’s glass to break. It is unknown if the suspect was injured.

Following standard procedure, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.

Detectives
are asking the public’s help in looking for the suspect and the
vehicle. The vehicle may have damage from the rounds striking the
passenger and rear areas of the vehicle and may also have one or more
windows broken out. The suspect may have been injured. If someone
locates a vehicle that matches that description, detectives ask that
they contact the police emergency number 9-1-1. Anyone with information
about this incident is asked to contact the 3rd District Investigative
Section at 301-565-5835.
