The Great Escape - Life-Safety Expo and Open House
October is Fire Safety Month
The men and women of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service
urge you to take action, to keep everyone in your home safe.
On Sunday, October 5, 2008 the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue
Service joins forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) and the Boy Scouts of America in a major event at
the Public Safety Training Academy, in Rockville to remind local
residents of their role in preventing home fires. Also on Sunday,
October 5, 2008 several other local fire and recue stations in
Kensington, Sandy Spring and Cabin John will conduct an Open House, in
combination with Fire Prevention month in Montgomery County. On
Saturday, October 4, 2008 the Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad will
open their doors and sponsor activities in conjunction with the Taste
of Bethesda.
You and your family are invited to attend the second annual Montgomery
County Fire/Rescue Expo on October 5, 2008, open to the public and
free of charge. The event will feature emergency equipment from
throughout Montgomery County, as well as, 'live' fire and rescue
demonstrations, fire truck displays, educational activities for all
ages and other activities.
“We’re very pleased to announce that this year’s Open House will have
a special focus on fire prevention for families, with a spotlight on
Boy and Girl Scouts.” said Montgomery County Chief Tom Carr. “The fall
and winter months are traditionally the most dangerous time of the
year for injury and deaths from residential fires and all of us in the
fire safety community are particularly excited about this chance to
work closely with the families in Montgomery County.”
Throughout the Month of October the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue
Service (MCFRS) will be promoting fire safety and injury prevention in
a variety of ways, including many traditional fire-rescue station
"Open Houses," visiting schools and senior centers and participating
in community events. Firefighters and safety advocates will spread
the word about the importance of developing and practicing a home
escape plan.
Remember, the time change from Daylight Saving to Standard Time will
occur later this year on Sunday, November 2, 2008. Get into a
lifesaving habit - when you "Change Your Clock – Change Your Battery."
Any Montgomery County resident may receive a free smoke alarm and/or a
home safety evaluation by calling the Fire Safety Hotline at
240.777.2476
For 85 years fire departments across the nation have observed Fire
Prevention Week, making it the longest running public health and
safety observance on record. Montgomery County observes this activity
for the entire Month of October.
“Spending an hour or two on a beautiful weekend afternoon with us
could be the best thing you do this season to help keep your family
safe.” concluded Chief Carr.
