I was listening to the search, and at the same time looking at the
aerial photography at Google Earth. The ECC was able to establish
"Phase 2" latitude and longitude for the elderly missing person from
his cellphone. Phase 2 means the actual location based either on a
GPS receiver in the phone or a sophisticated multilateration network,
as opposed to some estimate based on the nearest cell towers (called
Phase 1). But the Incident Commander seemed to think the location
was based on cell phone tower locations.
The dispatcher gave the location with a format three digits, dot,
three digits, dot, three digits. When Trooper 1 got that information
they replied "too many digits". I discarded the last three digits
and entered the three dot three into Google Earth. I was seeing not
the heavily wooded area they were searching near the parking lot, but
a cleared area a little south of there with four rows of trees
running north-south. This was about N 34 degrees 4 minutes 35 sec W
77 deg 24 min 32 sec. I was wondering whether I should call ECC and
tell them what I was seeing, But then ATV 14 found him. So I did nothing.
