The mode used was acoustic mode using the compression wave method of
transmission, and what I was hearing was jet engine exhaust. All I had to
do was look up, and I could see the planes - rather, their lights, at
night. By day, they were lost against the sky. I guess the a/c are about
thirty thousand feet up. The sound carries that far, straight down, but
not to central Viginia. There is a noticeable time lag. If you look for
the source of the sound, you'll never find the planes, so you learn to
"look ahead" of the source of the sound. I guess that's about a thirty
second delay. I'm not sure how fast they're going, but you have to look
several degrees ahead of the sound, as it were.
I imagine this was related to the visit to the fire fighters memorial in
Emmitsburg MD.
I'm just having some fun with the list.
