Adding a Discrim tap is great but wait till the warranty is up then add a
tap.
Your best bet is to check our RR and see if you can send Paul an PM as he
was one of the designers.
BTW the 996 is great. I got it the second week it was released.

Also, just an FYI. If you want to play with the 996 decoding one of MPDC's
freqs in conventional mode, you will find the most traffic on 453.45 since
it's at the "top of the stack". If you look at MPDC on one of the trunking
programs like Unitrunker, you will see 453.45 seems to always get hit as if
trunked channel requests start at the first freq.

Andy, I haven't confirmed this with the 996, but the 396 has a CC decode
bug. If you program CC hits to search for the CTCSS tone, then it will not
automagically decode digital. However, once you turn the CC Search for
CTCSS off (which I **think** is the default), digital transmissions will
automagically be decoded if set to auto. Also, concerning the CC hits,
there is another bug (again, I can confirm it for the 396, but never tried
it on the 996). If you maxed out the auto store value, it would not auto
store... hmmm. Anyway, I keep the 396 and 996, set to 250 for auto store.
This way I don't worry about the bug. Finally, concerning CC hits. If you
have them set to auto store, or you are storing them upon reception, they go
into their own "Close Call" system.

Unfortunately, the 996T does not appear to save the 10 auto-stored
close-call hits when the scanner is turned off, so I cannot retrieve the
frequency. Also, I played a little with the digital reception tonight. I can
get it to decode P25 if I program a channel and specifically tell it that it
is digital, but in search mode, I can't get the radio to automatically
decode digital when it stops on a (known) P25 channel. So now I wonder if
the radio does in fact automatically decode digital in Close Call mode.
Although the manual is very long, it seems to be short on details of exactly
when it decodes digital. If anyone knows how to make the radio automatically
detect and decode digital in search (or Close Call) mode, I would be most
appreciative to know. I have looked through the menus very thoroughly and
haven't found this option. Perhaps I should visit the 996T Yahoo group?
Cheers,
Andy
