I don't know about the Tyson's area, but the CAP flies regular patrols along
Rt. 50 between Annapolis and I think Easton - mostly to monitor Bay Bridge
traffic on weekends in the summertime. The USCG Aux has an air flotilla
based at Gaithersburg that flies Bay patrols among other missions.

Subject: [Scan-DC] CAP aircraft
I was reading in the newspaper a few weeks ago about the Civil Air
Patrol going into high gear for some reason, mostly vague. The article
mentioned that during World War II the CAP was used to patrol and look
out for enemy activity off our coast, which I am left to suppose was
intended to serve as a suggested rationale for this new increase of CAP
activity.
Since reading that article, I have taken note of the high number of
single engine aircraft that are cruising the skies, at least around
where I live, near Tyson's Corner. These are flying at low altitudes,
about the same as used by traffic aircraft, and these craft are
abundant, at least compared to any recollections I have of small craft
activity over the years I have resided in these parts.
Does anyone know of the real purpose of all these flights other than
to burn fuel, make noise and log lots of flight time? Are they really
searching for "enemy" activity, and how would they know it if they saw
it?
Any knowledge of frequencies they are using for CAP to CAP comms?
Steve
