PGFD Field Paramedics Featured in National Magazine

The January 2007 edition of JOURNAL OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
(JEMS) Magazine features an article about Prince George’s County Field
Paramedics.  Field Paramedics work the field level during Washington
Redskins home games at Fed Ex Field.

The 7-page article, “ANY GIVEN SUNDAY,” is in the January 2007 edition
of JEMS.

The Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Department is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position
of Paramedic Trainee, grade Y-01.  Recruits are trained in the
Fire/EMS Training Academy as Emergency Medical Technician – Basic
(EMT-B).  This position is entry-level trainee level work responsible
for operating and maintaining EMS equipment, apparatus and quarters;
providing first aid, basic and/or advanced life support; and
transporting patients.  This work may expose incumbents to hazardous
conditions/situations and includes the operation of emergency vehicles
and equipment.  Candidates with EMT – Intermediate (EMT-I) or
Paramedic (EMT-P) certification are eligible to apply; however, they
will be considered trainees until completion of the County
certification process as an EMT-I or EMT-P and successful completion
of the probationary period.

After successfully completing the Fire/EMS Training Academy, the
trainee will be eligible to train to the EMT – Intermediate or
Paramedic certification.

TYPICAL DUTIES: Incumbent responds promptly to emergency calls and
operates vehicles, abiding by State and County laws; assesses patient’
s condition and reports assessment to the appropriate individuals;
assumes a support role and assists when a physician is present;
performs emergency medical care in accordance with established medical
protocol; operates basic and/or advanced life support equipment;
performs manual skills to carry out rescues of endangered persons;
records patient information using departmental report forms; forwards
pertinent records and reports to appropriate offices, divisions, or
agencies; performs routine vehicle/equipment maintenance;
attends/conducts in-service training classes; maintains state
certification; meets the department’s standard for strength,
flexibility, aerobic capacity, and weight.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must have a High School Diploma or
equivalent (GED) recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education;
must be 18 years of age at the time of appointment; must have a valid
driver’s license prior to appointment and be able to establish
employment eligibility in accordance with the Immigration Reform and
Control Act of 1986 after conditional employment offer.

SELECTION PROCESS: Applicants must successfully complete and pass all
of the following:

Completion and submission of a Personal History Statement
Background Investigation
Psychological Screening
Oral Board
Conditional Offer of Employment
Physical Abilities Test
Medical Examination – complete physical
Final Offer of Employment


DISQUALIFIERS:  The following factors are considered disqualifying and
may result in non-selection for employment as a Prince George’s County
Paramedic Trainee.  Each of these disqualifiers will be reviewed for
each applicant on an individual basis.

           Criminal History

·         Criminal conviction, guilty plea or probation for a felony.

·         Conviction of any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude
(breaking and entering, theft, arson, or assault).

            Traffic Violations

·         Six or more negative points on a Maryland Operator’s License
or the equivalent for out of state licenses until the points expire.

·         One DWI/DUI conviction, guilty plea or probation within
three years of the date of application.  More than one DWI/DUI
conviction, guilty plea or probation.

·         Any conviction for serious violations including, but not
limited to, manslaughter, hit-and-run with injury, leaving the scene
of an accident, eluding police or any suspension, revocation or
refused licenses until the license is reinstated.

            Drugs

·         Illegal possession, usage, distribution, sale or purchase of
non-prescription narcotics, controlled substances or illegal drugs
(such as heroin, cocaine, or hallucinogens).

            Other

·         Any misrepresentation, falsification or omission of any
information on any application, document or in response to any
question in the applicant process.

·         History or pattern of alcohol abuse.

Additional or other reasons for disqualification may include (but are
not limited to) the following: poor work history; failure to meet
physical standards; inability to complete any of the component parts
of the selection process; and/ or any other disqualifying factor as
determined by the Fire/EMS Department.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Any of the following:

·         EMT-B certification (Maryland or National Registry)

·         EMT-I certification (Maryland or National Registry)

·         EMT-P certification (Maryland or National Registry)

·         Successful completion of college credits

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

All persons selected for the Paramedic Trainee position must agree to
and sign a Condition of Employment stating that they will:

·         At the completion of Fire/EMS Recruit School, obtain and
thereafter maintain Maryland Emergency Medical Technician-Basic,
Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate or Emergency Medical
Technician-Paramedic certification that meets or exceeds the minimum
standard adopted by the Department.

·         Maintain a driver operator license for class of vehicle
specified by the Fire Chief.

·         Maintain at least an overall satisfactory rating in the
County’s Past Performance Appraisal System.

·         Participate in and successfully complete a mandatory
Physical Fitness Program as designed by the Fire/EMS Department.

·         Successfully complete Fire/EMS Recruit School, the
probationary period (1-year), and the Recruit Study Guide under
guidelines established by the Fire Chief.

EXAMINATION INFORMATION:  Two (2) separate entry-level examinations
will be given under this announcement.  Each applicant may only sit
for one of those examinations.  The first entry-level examination will
be conducted on Saturday, February 24, 2007.  The second entry-level
examination will be conducted on Saturday, August 18, 2007.
Applicants who meet the minimum education requirements will be
provided additional information regarding the written examination,
including a study guide and the time and location of the test.

ELIGIBILITY TO WORK:

Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, an employer is
required to hire only U.S. citizens and lawfully authorized alien
workers.  Applicants who are selected for employment will be required
to show and verify authorization to work in the United States.

CLOSING DATE:  In order to be eligible for the February 24, 2007
examination, completed applications (walk-in, postal mail, e-mail and
courier mail) MUST be received in the Office of Human Resources
Management by 5:00 p.m., on January 26, 2007.  Applications received
from January 27, 2007 – June 29, 2007 will be eligible for the August
18, 2007 examination.  All completed applications must be received by
