Good question!  In the ICAO world, K is for (mainland) US, P is for 
Pacific, and PA is for Pacific/Alaska which PH is for Pacific/Hawaii. 
The fact that HNL is in Hawaii (thus PHNL) and ANC is in Alaska (thus 
PANC) really makes everyone luck out.  But in general, the IATA codes 
(three-letters) and the ICAO codes (4-letters) only match up out of 
luck or tradition.  Colocated at ANC is Elmendorf AFB "EDF" but 
according to ICAO, it's PA-ED (get it?).

I think flightaware.com uses ICAO when it exists, and falls back to the 
FAA designation when it doesn't.  Not all airfields have an ICAO 
designator.  ANd of course the US Military uses their own system :-)
