[Scan-DC] New scanner programming?

Ok,

I am more of a listener than a contributor on this group but I will jump on this bandwagon. When Mont Co was switching over I was just gonna get 2 way and program it not to transmit but then uniden came out with their product and I joined their yahoo chatter group and then when I went to buy a scanner I got the rs pro 96. The guy at the rs store had already programmed the floor model with scan cat lite and gave me a discount for buying the floor model so with that and the pre programmed v folders off I went.

If the thought of programming in trunked systems didn't drive me to distraction enough, the scan cat software put me over the top. I ran off just the v-folders for a long time before a friend took me aside and introduced me to Win96. Life got a lot better after that.

So when deciding - my 2 cents are this. If you are a newbie and just want to listen with the least amount of effort and you don't have a friend that will clone his for you or program yours then with the v-folders the radio shack is the way to go and then you just need to decide if you want a portable or mobile/desk top version.

But that was then and this is now. With all the software that is out there, and most of it is windows based, plus add to that sites like radioreference.com and yahoo question and answer groups its really set up that you can get a lot of help in a short amount of time and just a little bit of knowledge will take you a long way. I still love my pro 96 but have many friends that have the uniden or even some that have both.

New guy to trunked systems especially digital and not wanting to spend too much $$ then scanner, cable and a copy of win96 is the way to go.

But just like there are windows lovers but people out there are still buying new apple macs - everyone will have their favs.

Also - my apologies to any ladies on the list - any references to guys can be gals just as easy.

Good Luck!!

Wayll, since we have a discussion going...

I had a h*lluva learning curve with the Uniden 796 when I first got it, as
far as learning to (first) use it and (second, and even longer curve)
programming it. Learning to program it is virtually another hobby... so I
have to maintain that the RS radios have the advantage if one wants one to
"plug and play".

Haven't heard the audio on the RS scanner, but as John and I have discussed,
the audio on his newer Uniden is much better than that on my 796. And I
think the Uniden covers one band that the RS doesn't... maybe a mil band?
So ya pays your money and ya takes your choice, I guess.

Cathy, I'll email you privately about some of the talkgroup changes in Mtgy
County.

Did you see the B-17 and B-24 this weekend?

Regards to all,

Doug
