Capital Beltway in Maryland Closed
Sep 7th - 8:45am
WASHINGTON - The Capital Beltway in Maryland is closed in College Park.
Police have guns drawn as part of a felony traffic stop that started
at 7:50 a.m.
Maryland State Police tell WTOP officers have a stolen car pulled
over. A trooper on routine patrol saw the car with two people inside
of it parked on right shoulder of the Inner Loop. The trooper ran the
car's tags and found it was stolen.
The two suspects in the car are refusing to communicate with police,
and they have refused to leave the vehicle, police tell WTOP Traffic.
TV traffic helicopters show a number of state police cars and Prince
George's County police cars around the car.
The traffic stop is on the Inner Loop at Route 1. The Inner Loop is
closed at Route 1, which is exit 25.
Because the dangerous nature of the situation, police opted to shut
the Beltway down. The Outer Loop is closed at Kenilworth Avenue, which
is Exit 23.
WTOP Traffic reports alternate routes are jammed.
The closure is the second Thursday morning involving Beltway traffic.
Around 6 a.m. the Outer Loop was closed after University Boulevard
because of a multiple vehicle accident. That closure lasted about 40
minutes.
