[Scan-DC] Pike Electric of Mt. Airy NC Utility Crew

Pike Electric is a major semi-permanent subcontractor to Va. Power and
Appalachian Power. After the last hurricane they were the ones who did
99% of the power restoration work in my area of southside Va. They did
an excellent job reinstalling damaged power poles/cable in swamy areas.
They use several on site crews in an area who are very active with truck
radios on various 49 mhz. frequencies using pl 67.0. A local on site
supervisor typically uses one of the 49 mhz. frequencies as a temporary
repeater for all the crews comms. Individual crews use other 49 mhz.
frequencies simplex. Because they do so much work in Va. they have a
couple of permanent 49 mhz. repeaters in SW Va. on Brumley Mountain. A
radio tech makes a weekly circuit to various on site crew locations to
repair, replace or deal with any radio problems. 49 mhz. seemed to
suffice for all their on site comms. I never saw any HTs or heard any
UHF comms. I had a chance to talk to the crew who was working on
restoring power on my street and check out their radios. Their only
radio activity was on 49 mhz.
