The abbreviation for Gaithersburg is GAI, but pilots refer to it as
Montgomery on the radio (123.75). Officially, it's Montgomery Airpark. You
can land either way, (runways 14 or 32), since it's not a towered airport,
and all you have to do is announce your intentions, e.g. "Montgomery
Traffic, Piper niner six romeo 3 miles for downwind for 32 Montgomery."
(Redundancy on which airport is necessary, since Freeway and Culpeper share
123.75.)
Generally, if you get intercepted around here, it's by DC ANG F-16s or the
US Customs Blackhawks, and they would take you to Frederick Municipal
Airport (FDK), because it's outside the ADIZ. (Air Defense Identification
Zone.)
The outside deck of the restaurant at GAI has a good view of the runway, but
they are closed for dinner; otherwise you'll be looking through the chain
link from the parking lot along with the news crews.

Wayll, we in Gaithersburg just got buzzed by a couple of fighters - neighbor
(ex-Navy) says they were F-22s. Of course, I was 10-100 at the time and
missed most of it, but apparently they escorted a light plane into
Gaithersburg International Aerodrome or whatever it's called... neighbor
said the guy was so freaked out that he landed the wrong way! Apparently a
helicopter (Homey-land Security?) landed right afterwards.
I'm tempted to take a ride down there but my better judgement tells me not
to!
Hmmmm, now hearing "police" sirens... may or may not be related - scanner is
in the other room and I'm not monitoring the police channel at the moment.
