I almost always travel with a commercial grade VHF and UHF (motorola, kenwood) portable radios in carry on bagage on domestic flights. The TSA folks know that they are radios on xray and only once have asked to look. Had to show operation - squelch.
I tried a ham radio (VX-5) on international flight - not an experience I would reccomend repeating.
Pre 9/11 I would have one bank set up in a portable scanner with all the VHF fire frequencies and just turn on the scanner and with my earbud listen to all the fire radios as I traveled across country. It was fun, have not tried since 9/11.
