Guys,
The WAMO callsign is derived from an old acronym for the Washington Area
Measurements Office (WAMO) which was the old "cover term" for the Dep't of
Energy's NEST aircraft.
The official name for this unit is the Dep't of Energy's Remote Sensing
Laboratory. The Andrews' RSL is the eastern base for nuclear emergency response
and environmental remote sensing operations. They've been at Andrews for about
20 years.
According to the Dep't of Energy's web site the unit can perform specialized
radiological detection and monitoring.
As far as I know they have two King Air 200s and a chopper. Not sure of the
type of chopper.
There is also a similar detachment in the Las Vegas area (Nellis AFB).
