Yes, you need to get away from the city lights, but you can see
magnificent aurorae in Northern VA and we'll probably get a good chance
this week. I have spent time in some northern latitudes and have seen
some nice aurorae there, but I've never seen a display more fantastic than
what I saw in Ashburn, VA in Nov., 2001. The entire northern sky was
brilliantly illuminated by nearly the whole spectrum of visible colors and
the display--which lasted about two hours--wasn't even washed out by the
nearly full moon as it rose. Be prepared to head out of town and to stay
up late this week; you will not want to miss a big geomagnetic storm
if/when it strikes over the next few days.
