In summary - over the last 36 hours or so, the sun has erupted with several XRay flares; one X17 class flare the other day caused a blackout for a while on the day side of the Earth. That is the 4th strongest (or so) flare ever recorded in this low portion of the cycle. In addition, there have been a X5 and X1 flare within the last 24 hours, along with an energetic proton event.
While none of the flares were Earth directed, it's thought we might get a glancing blow from the ejected material. Spaceweather has a nice synopsis of what has happened.
Those poor folks in NO using HF (COTHEN and the various ham nets) are not going to like this....73s Mike
