Ron,
You can use 8 conductor flat "ribbon" cable normally used for phones. Radio
Shack has this.
You can also use RS232 connectors with "modular" RJ11 (I think) ends. The
RS232 connects have 8 wires that you can plug into the appropriate holes in
the connector, so you can make a "straight through" or a "null modem" cable.

The pins you want are (on a 25 pin connector)
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 20. Some computers want pin 8, but it's rare.
You decide on a color code for the pins, and go.
I've got the tools for crimping the connectors on the cable, if you want to
borrow 'em.
