All,

Thanks to a tip from Jack this morning was able to tune in to some testing at
the Aberdeen Proving Grounds (248.4) involving Smokey SAMs.

First time I had heard that terminology so I had to look it up. According to
various web sites Smokey Sams are mock missiles fired at fighter aircraft on
exercise.

The aircraft (callsign Flight Test) involved in this testing is working with
and ground controls (Smokey 1 & 2). The aircraft advised the control that they
were a little too far away and thus the intensity of Smokey SAMs wasn't
showing up on the scopes. Flight test suggested that they close their approaches
in to 1.5kms in order to see if the Smokey SAMs could "light up" the scopes for
better.

on each "run" the aircraft, at a certain point, would count down 10-0 then
ask control to " fire " probably simulating the launch of a SAM at the test
aircraft.
