Good to know about Montgo going along with the COG system.
As was mentioned, the COG system drives the numbering of the units. All NoVA
departments are assigned a 100-series of numbers as follows:
Arlington - 100
Alexandria - 200
MWAA - 300
Fairfax - 400
Prince William - 500
Loudoun - 600
Montgomery - 700
Fairfax Volunteer Staffed - 800
Fauquier County, VA - 1100
I know that DCFD and PGFD are assigned numbers also, but they're not used (at
least not at this time!)
As for the box assignments, keen observation that the box numbers in
Arlington don't correspond with the COG numbers. The initial mutual box assignments
started in 1975, and at that time, the following numbers were given:
Fairfax 1-49
Alexandria - 50-59
MWAA & Military - 60-69
Arlington - 70-79
The fire box assignments were created in conjunction with this numbering
system. For example, Station 3 in Arlington was Station 73, and all of the box's
in its area were 7301, 7302, etc. However, when the modern-day COG unit
number assignments were made, the boxes stayed the same. Therefore, now Engine 103
is first due to a 73 box.
Hope this helps...!
