LifeEvac is a state contracted non-emergency helicopter inter-facility
transport @ $4,000 per flight. In some instances LifeEvac also responds to
emergency calls for medflight transport. It is based with crew at Richmond
Airport at the Millionair support facility. There were two Life Evac
helicopters. Now apparantly there is only one. The dispatcher is located
near Denver, Colorado, and the helicopters are dispatched via a land line
interface through a 453.1250 mhz. repeater located in the Richmond area.
The pilot has the discretion not to fly if in his opinion weather
conditions do not permit it. A nurse is on each flight on sometimes
communicates with the target hospital usually on 462.9500 mhz. using an HT
or the pilot can use the helicopter radio. Normally LifeEvac communicates
to Va. EOC and MCV hospital on 462.9500 mhz. giving frequent position
reports, etc. Sometimes the helicopter has problems accessing the repeater
even though the input signal is strong. It may be a pl related issue.
Last summer MCV was communicating with the helicopter listening on the
input 467.9500 mhz. and transmitting through the 462.9500 mhz. repeater.
When airborne the helicopter also will give frequent position reports to
his dispatcher on 453.125 mhz. as long as the helicopter is in range of the
repeater. Flying at 1,200-1,500 ft. it is no problem for the helicopter to
access the 453.125 mhz. repeater airborne from the Tidewater area. In a
northernly direction, Fredericksburg probably is the repeater range limit.
