Monitors must retune
By Pete Macinta, Daily Banner
CAMBRIDGE - County residents who have monitored emergency radio channels
over the decades have noticed silence on some frequencies that once used
to bustle with activity.
Among them have been the frequencies used for emergency dispatch of
46.06mHz, and the Cambridge Police Department on 453.3mHz.
City police have joined the county's trunked system in the 800mHz range.
The emergency dispatch frequency is now 151.07mHz.
Once emergency personnel respond by radio, they are then assigned a
channel or operating group to communicate in the county's trunked system.
....
Amateur radio operator Ben Saladino (KC5IRJ) explained on his website at
www.bensware.com/scandfw/trunked.htm:
"One of the frequencies is used as a control channel and is often
switched automatically every 24 hours. Each radio in the trunked system
monitors the control channel to determine what frequency is currently
assigned for the active channel on the radio," the website said.
It continued, "That frequency may be any frequency in the trunked radio
system, except the control channel."
"A trunked system gives you a greater ability to have talk groups," said
Public Safety Director Steve Williams.
....
According to www.cityfreq.com, the following frequencies had been
allocated to Dorchester County, Spectrum and Licensing Services:
810.9875, 811.2625, 812.2625, 813.2625, 814.2625, 855.9875, 856.2625,
857.2625, 858.2625, 859.2625mHz.
....
The county's dispatch on 151.07mHz has been monitored in Salisbury.
