[Scan-DC] Tigers A/A freqs

I've used Iridium phones and, as described by Shawn, they're like big
cellphones. An aircraft could, I suppose, use the system...but it would be
like placing a phone call through a satellite repeater. My experience with
Iridium phones is that they're not very reliable and the quality of the
connection varies. They're good in a pinch but I wouldn't want to use them
if other comms were available.

Maybe I don't understand Iridium sats, but I
thought that phone number switching is done at
central offices. If an a/c has the proper
equipment, i.e sat radios or IDM's, why is it not
possible to use the Iridium constellation for
comms?

Kevin (and all),
I wouldn't think air to air comm would go to
Iridium.
Iridium is similar to a (big and heavy) cellphone.
AFAIK, it does not have a push-to-talk (PTT)
feature.
So, you have to enter somebody's number (which is
something like 13 digits) wait for the call to be
setup over the satellites, wait for the other
person
to answer, then you can start talking.
As such, it doesn't lend itself to easily being
used
in the cockpit of an airplane.
