[Scan-DC] BC796D Talkgroup Processing Software Problem

The 796D is a fine receiver. However, it is not problem free.
Unless Uniden has changed the scanner software, the 796D contains a
software processing deficiency that Uniden has known about and provided
a "flash" software fix that could be downloaded from the internet.
Basically the software deficiency is the 796D may not process talkgroups
40,000 and above correctly. The receiver may stop on a talkgroup but
not remain on frequency until the transmission is finished or the audio
may chop or both. Hopewell, Va. uses talkgroups in the 40,000 range and
Va. Beach, Va. uses the 60,000 range. I experienced these problems in
trying to receive Hopewell when the surrounding cities/counties in other
banks using 800 mhz. TRS using lower than 40,000 range talkgroups were
received with no problem. A RS232 serial data cable interface is
required to make the software grade.

After installing the software upgrade and making one incremental
change in the quality voice setting I have not experienced any problems
in receiving Hopewell or the other TRS programed in my 796D. The
software upgrade file's id are "BCi96D115.zip" and "setup.exe". The
last time I checked the Uniden webpage I could not find a link to this
software fix. It may be there somewhere but if so it was not obvious to
me. See my recent posts (W4UVV) under "Uniden" scanners and the
"Virginia Forum" at <www.radioreference.com> for more discussion on this
subject.

If you email Uniden for assistance in locating the aforementioned
software upgrade files on the internet and are unsuccessful, I can
provide them upon request.
