Washington Technology (08/02/04) Vol. 19, No. 9, P. 1; Welsh, William
Washington, D.C., plans to implement a high-speed, wireless, broadband data
network that is able to handle real-time voice, data, and video, the initial
city-wide deployment of its type for public safety. To acquire the substantial
bandwidth to send data and video to first responders, Washington obtained a
special license from the FCC to utilize the 700 MHz band, and awarded a $3
million contract this past February for a pilot to Motorola and its key
subcontractor, Flarion Technologies. The first installation will be concluded this summer,
and the network will be tested over the coming year. Numerous state and local
areas are also attempting to deploy wireless interoperable solutions for
first responders. Seven towns in Eastern Massachusetts have formed an anti-terror
coalition and purchased 90 Hewlett-Packard iPaq handheld devices that have
PocketCop software. Created by BIO-Key Technologies, PocketCop has wireless
communications capability that provides police in the participating communities
with access to the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Information System, the FBI's
National Crime Information Center, and data repositories in other states.
Meanwhile, the anti-terror consortium Pennsylvania Southwest Emergency Response
Group awarded a $500,000-plus contract to Evoxis for an emergency communications
system. Prodigent for Emergency Management, Evoxis' instant messaging
software, allows emergency and priority communications through email, phones, pagers,
and other wireless devices.
