From the department of what it's worth.

Just a brief FYI

For years I used a large TET 50-500 Mhz discone to transmit on the 6, 2,
1-1/4 and 3/4 meter ham bands. For an omni-directional antenna that
has a constant input impedence over a wide range a discone is a great
transmitter antenna.

The loss from an impedence mis-match is less important for receivers.
If, because of less wind-loading for example, you could extend a light
whip antenna higher on a pole, it would probably pick up more stuff then
the discone at its lower max height. I had a 2 meter vertical up ~
15ft higher then the discone. While I could only xmit on 2, the
veritcle out performed the discone on my scanner between 34Mhz and the
900Mhz cell phone area.
