   Actually, Jack, it sounds very much like you have too much signal coming 
into the radio.  Removing elements off the antenna will not do the job; 
without knowing which elements to remove, and how much, you will likely 
damage the periodic's freq response much more than you want to.
   Your better bet is to insert attenuation into the feed.  I'm not sure of 
any manufacturers that make something like this; surely there are some 
(perhaps those of you that do ham foxhunts can help out here).
