Apparently, it started as a car fire, in the middle of 23rd St. That
sparked a fire in a leaking gas line at the GW Hospital construction site.

The initial car fire response was upped to a full hazmat box when the
initial units arrived on-scene. They reported heavy fire stretching along
23rd St., near Washington Circle. Parts of the street buckled. It took, by
my estimate, more than an hour to get the gas shut off and about 90 minutes
(and a second alarm assignment) before the fire was knocked.

About five patients were reported to have been evacuated from the ER and the
ER was closed to incoming. Patients in the hospital, itself, were moved to
areas of the building away from the leak and fire.
