Subject: [Scan-DC] Montgomery County VHF
Yesterday, during the Billy Goat Trail operation, PG E-101 (Laurel VFD),
along with Howard E-111, was alerted to assist comappny 15 with an odor of
smoke at The Hair Affair on Route 29. E-111 was able to switch over, =
either
on their mobile or portable (I'm not sure if it has a 800 Spectra mobile
yet, or still has the VHF MCX1000) to the right talk group. However, to my
knowledge, no PGFD unit (except for maybe some at Bladensburg?) has 800
capabilities. At any rate, on switching to Montgomerty County 1 (as I
believe we're supposed to), all I heard was Billy Goat Trail ops. Anyone
know if there's a secondary VHF channel in use for patching to 7B? Or is =
old
ch 1 going to remain as a soft patch, patched to whatever?
Thanks.
Doug (another one...!)
__________
Doug -
You're correct. The big holdup WAS the GPS mapping system.
By the way...I don't know if anyone else noticed but for two incidents =
today
on Billygoat Trail along the Potomac the talk group patched into old =
Channel
1 was 7G. I assume this was so that the Eagle could communicate with
Angler's Command, which was on 7G. Channel 1 has now resumed simulcasting
7B.

When Montgo units go into PG they are supposed to switch to 5A, 5B, or 5C.
Since PG does not have 800 mHz, these talk groups are patched into PG's =
EMS,
Fire and Ch. 4/6,. respectively. I'm not sure how it works when PG =
responds
into Montgo, but will try to find out.
Montgo's VHF Channel 1 is supposed to be normalled as a simulcast of 7B,
but, supposedly, can be patched to simulcast ANY talkgroup. There are no
plans, that I know of, to use any of the other old VHF channels.
As you can probably hear today...Montgo is having trouble with these
simulcasts. As I listen to Channel 1 right now, I can only hear the units
in the field...no dispatcher. The Channel 2 simulcast has both sides. =
For
a period of time yesterday afternoon, though, the Channel 2 simulcast
appeared to be down.

Terry, I kinda doubt even someone at HRO Woodbridge would be able to do
the programming. However, do yourself a favor; if you do get a BC250d =
with
the digital card, get the ARC250 software from Butel (it's available at
Scanner Master, among other places). It's very likely someone around here

In the *highly unlikely* possibility no one here can help with such a

(C'mon folks, don't make me out to be a fibber here!!!)
And as for learning about trunking; trunkedradio.net has a few intro
articles to get you started. By and large, don't sweat the hex codes; you
generally won't need them, unless you start using some more advanced
utilities like
Trunker. Concentrate on concepts first. This link will point you to a

Doug -
You're probably hearing multiple, minor incidents on Bravo. ALL incidents,=
except major ones, are handled on that channel.
Alpha, Bravo, etc. is the international phonetic alphabet. It's now the
official alphabet used by Montgo fire-rescue.

Subject: [Scan-DC] Legg Mason Tennis Classic Frequencies
I went to the Tennis Classic yesterday, and searched for frequencies for
a few hours. Found quite a few--see this webpage for details:
http://www.davidschoenberger.net/scanning/dc/washington.htm
(Look under the "Special Event" section.) The radios they were using
(assume they were rentals) had a blue sticker listing all the channels,
but I couldn't get a good look at one. Also, the Park Police were
providing security and helping with parking, and were using Channel 4
(166.8500 [127.3]). Some, though not all, the officers had what looked
like XTS-3000 or XTS-5000 portables, so I guess they are planning a
switch to a Project 25-compliant system in the future, like many federal
agencies in the Washington area.
If anyone's going to this event, let me know if you find anything
additional or get a look at one of those stickers on the radios.
I'm off to Redskins training camp next week--I'll have a report. Have a
good weekend.

Absolutely. In the early 70s, RS had a handheld tunable radio that some
friends used for railroad listening. I never got around to buying one. My
closest Lafayette was at Parkington, now known as Ballston Commons.

Funny you should mention that. My first scanner, a four-channel
Montgomery Ward 856 made by Sharp, can "outpull" just about every other
scanner I have. I have only railroad crystals for it, so I can't comment
on how well it does on other frequencies.

I'll see you, and raise you. First VHF receiver was a Hallicrafters, =
S-95,
tunable. Bought it in 1960. Used it to listen to NYPD and FDNY. Though
NYPD is up on the 450 mHz range now, you can still hear FDNY on the same
frequencies: 154.25 (Manhattan), 154.43 (Citywide), etc.
