Medical Transport Company Makes Big Change

MedStar Moves Dispatch Center

POSTED: 4:43 p.m. EDT July 15, 2003

FORT MEADE, Md. -- A company that handles hundreds of ambulance and
medical helicopter rides is moving its communications center.

MedStar used to house its communications offices at the Washington
Hospital Center in the District. Now, after 20 years, a new dispatch
center is open at Tipton Airport in Anne Arundel County. The company
said the change will not negatively affect service.

Each year, the company handles 15,000 requests for ambulances and
3,200 requests for medical helicopter services.

With other locations in Charles, Frederick and Talbot counties,
MedStar says it can airlift patients to hospitals in about 20 minutes.

The company said its first patients were primarily victims of car
accidents. However, now accident victims account for only about 8
percent of air transports while about 90 percent are critical care
patients who are being moved to other hospitals.
