Montgomery County Police Headquarters Evacuated

Montgomery County Police Headquarters, 2350 Research Boulevard, was 
evacuated for a period time this morning.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., a police department employee was opening mail 
addressed to the Montgomery County Police Headquarters - Chief and 
discovered a letter with a white powdery substance inside the envelope.   
Montgomery County Fire/Rescue Hazardous Incident Response Team (HIRT) 
responded.  The building was evacuated while the HIRT conducted tests.  
After the material was field tested with negative results, employees 
returned to the building.  The unknown substance will go to a laboratory for 
further analysis.

Detectives from the 1st District Investigative Section will be conducting 
the follow-up investigation.  Under Maryland law, sending such a hoax letter 
is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and fine of up to 
$10,000.  Upon conviction, the court may order the defendant to pay 
restitution to the county for actual costs reasonably incurred in responding 
to the hoax.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the 
Montgomery County Police 1st District Investigative Section or Crime Solvers 
of Montgomery County at 1-800-673-2777.  Crime Solvers is offering a cash 
reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and 
indictment of the person(s) responsible for this crime.
