The Francis Scott Key Bridge on the Baltimore Beltway is shut down in both directions due to "ongoing police activity," Maryland Transportation Authority officials said this afternoon.
The incident is not "security-related," said Kelly Melhem, a transportation authority spokeswoman. She declined to provide any further details on the activity, saying only that it was "still ongoing."
Transportation authority police are at the scene and are receiving assistance from other jurisdictions in the matter, Melhem said. The bridge has been closed since 4 a.m.
Officials are advising motorists to use alternate routes, including the Fort McHenry Tunnel and the Harbor Tunnel. Melhem said it was unclear when the span would reopen.
"We are hoping for a favorable resolution in the matter and we will reopen the bridge at that time," she said.
