Hi Dave,
I don't know if you considered it or not, but Ben Saladino's Trunk Manager
($15.00) & Radio Manager ($40.00) are good runner ups (www.bensware.com).
They cover all the Unidens. Trunk Manager is good for programming purposes.
For computer control, you must use Radio Manager. I really like Radio
Manager, because it logs all hits to RecAll Pro (if you have it). I use
RecAll Pro's GSM compression which gives me a little over 10 minutes of
recording per meg. This way, when I play back my attended, OR unattended
recorded files, I have the time and date stamp, AND the frequency
(conventional) or talkgroup (trunked) plus text label for every recording.
Take care,
Dewey

Yes, the 785D works well for Herndon groups. If you JUST want to listen
to Herndon the best way is to put in all the TGs and then lock out every
one but Herndon. However, I also include the FFX police districts such
as Centreville, Reston, etc because of their proximity, as well as the
respective fire dispatch and medical channels and hospitals.
I am of two minds about software. I am doing a product review for my
Journal newspaper column in the near future on the new SCANCAT program.
At $100, it is definitely pricey, but works with a whole plethora of
radios and types - almost any kind of receiver that can be radio
controlled. I have also spoken with the folks down in Shreveport who
make it and they are very approachable when you have a question or
problem. It has definite advantages when it comes to doing conventional
scan searching. Their $150 SE or surveillance version has a lot of bells
and whistles for the non-trunked user.
Butel's software is the datum point by which all software should be
judged. It is excellent. I can only judge the initial demo 250 version .
I have already prepaid for the 785D pro version and await its delivery
with bated breath.
What I can not seem to find in these packages is what's available for
the 780XL, being able to create a csv sheet by hand or pasting to import
the TG Ids and alpha tags. The Butel software somehow sees a "|" in
front of every imported freq, tag and ID, meaning it will not load into
the scanner.
If money is a problem, then go with Butel when it's out - the pro
version. If you are going to do a lot of just coneventional scanning, go
the SCANCAT route. If yopu can afford it, get both.
I hope Butels new software will LOG the hits with the TG Alpha Tags as
well as the ID numbers. I also found that both software packages I have
tested so far only log in the "search" mode, not the ID scan mode.
