Subject: [Scan-DC] Metro Transit Police Radio
update.

Received the following information this weekend
concerning the future of
the new Metro Transit Police Radio System.
Motorola and the CRCS radio
project team are prepared to activate a portion of
the new radio system
on May 10, 2003. I have no clue what CRCS stands
for. Anyway, the
portion that is ready is above ground, so only our
Scout cars will be
included in this upgrade phase. It will take
approximately 30 days
(after May 10th) to switch out the old for the new
in all of our
vehicles. Portable radios will not be issued
until the below ground
system is ready, which will be in the late Fall of
2003.

This begs the question, "Will everyone still hear
everyone else ?" The
answer is yes. Transmissions on both VHF
(Current) and UHF (New) radio
systems will be heard on the other without
degradation through a Penta
console patch in the Communications Division that
is being set up by
Motorola. However, there will be a one second
delay experienced when
receiving transmissions on the UHF radio from the
VHF radio. Receiving
transmissions in the Communications Division from
VHF or UHF will not be
affected by this delay. Should the VHF user wait
one second after
pressing the talk button, there will be no delay
to other users. That is
all I have for now. I will post updated
information as I receive it.
Eugene.
