Doug,
    Sounds like you're talking about F-14s.  The best way to tell planes
apart is by stabilizers, F-14s have two vertical stabilizers, F-16s have
one vertical stabilizer, F-18s have two stablizers that look like a V.
F-15s have two vertical stabilizers like F-14s, but F-14s have swing
wings, while F-15s have fixed wings (I believe).
