[Scan-DC] RE: Wronged side of the tracks

I as an aviation fan and photographer have no problem w/police officers
checking my ID and politely questioning me (but without the Rambo
attitude!). I rather expect officers to do this as part of their duties.
BUT, when the officer flat out lies and states that aviation photography is
against the law or tries to tell me that I cannot stand around on public
property while pursuing my aviation photography hobby and threatens to
arrest me for perfectly legal behavior- I object!
I fully support police who follow their oath to uphold and protect my
constitutional rights and civil liberties, but, not obnoxious & threatening
police officers who seem intent on trampling our civil liberties after 9/11.
As the fine officer from Brunswick stated earlier, we hobbyists can do much
to help, observe, and provide information to law enforcement. Don't alienate
us, we despise the terrorists as much as you do and want to protect the
subject of our hobbies.

Yes, the terrorists have won. :(
Hand over your scanner.
Stay locked in your room for fear of arrest.

Hey, don't pick on Ron. If you saw the size of his farm up here at Route 32
and
the B-W Parkway, you'd understand how busy he is, and why he limits his free
time to listening to our local area.
Rumor had it that Ron was going to retire soon, and move to a smaller farm
on
Oakland Mills Road in Howard County.

I apologize ahead of time for the soapbox, but....
While I know you're joking, I hope the phrase "Yes, the terrorists have won"
does not spread in our wonderful country. Many people have echoed similar
sentiments after Sept 11 (the media) and I always wished they would stop.
Being a radio nut, railroad-loving, tower-hunting, picture-taking, former
pilot myself, I too get upset when people are stopped and questioned. I
myself have been questioned by authorities and let go after a brief
explanation. But nowadays things are different. There are lots of people
out there who don't understand many "strange" hobbies that people have.
Many of those same people gasp when they learn what can be heard on a simple
scanner. And a modified scanner?! Oh my!
So what's the answer??? Education, in my opinion. But is education
teaching/showing the public how easy it is to really do something evil? Is
it letting the media get hold of something simple and fun that we covet and
let them turn it into a continuous week-long expose (which they'll air over
and over). I believe it's educating the right people. Maybe we do need to
get involved with local public service agencies. Maybe there's too few of
us to raise a stink.
These are just some things to think about as our infrastructure and "way of
life" come under focus in the years to come.

Greetings,
Which frequencies do I need to monitor for the MD State Police? I drive
between Fairfax VA and Easton MD daily and I would like to catch some of the
reports as they happen, as opposed to finding out about them via traffic
jams.
Thanks.

Paul,
The MSP freqs can be found at Alan Henney's fine site
here:
http://henney.com/chm/msp.htm
However, Metro Traffic might be a better bet to listen
to for backups. I don't have their 450 MHz handy or
I'd give them to you.

Jim, et al:
I understand where everyone is coming from on this...perhaps more than
most. I am a long time scanner "nut", and also a serving police officer.
Not only that, but my department serves a huge rail yard/MARC lot; in
Brunswick, Maryland. I don't think the railfans will have as much trouble
from the locals as they "might" from non locals or feds. We local coppers
are used to seeing them around. That having been said, tho, I have to admit
that I have been stepping up my "Field Interviews" of railfans, esp. at
night. I have yet to find one who wasn't courteous, friendly, and
understanding, esp. when I explained why I was stopping/questioning them.
I personally think that we (the police, anyway) will get more help from
the railfans (after all, they know the area around the railroad in some
cases better than we do) than they will hurt us. Same goes for the "scanner
buff" folks. I have never had a problem with those who listen, and over the
years, have been helped far more than "hurt" by listeners. And, lets face
facts; the bad guy element, for the most part, doesn't have the patience,
time, or dedication to really understand what is going on over the airwaves
well enough to act on the information. At least, for the most part.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth....

Well, with the recent activation of the St Mary's trunk system, and the
recent announcement that Caroline county is getting money together to join
the Talbot/Queen Anne's system, we have a bunch more news, courtesy of the
Maryland board of the Long Island Scanning Resources (LISR):
---------------------
From Chris Larmore
For anyones information. Some of you locals out there may have noticed you
are no longer hearing
MSP Salisbury on 39.780. You are now hearing MSP Princess Anne (Somerset
Co) on this Freq. MSP Salisbury can now be heard on
Wicomico Co's 800 mhz Motorola Trunked system. The system is a 5 freq
analog system heres the freqs:
857.9875
858.2375
858.9875
859.2375
860.2375
You can hear the Wic Shf's, MSP "E", and Wic FD's on any trunk tracker
using these freqs.
-----------------------------
I've written Chris back, asking him to verify the migration of MSP
Salisbury from 39 mhz. It would
seem strange, as most of the barracks that have patched into the local
county's 800 system (Carroll
and, more recently, Frederick come to mind) kept their old 39 mhz freq. As
soon as I hear something,
I'll let everyone know.
=============================
Worcester County is nearing completion of our new M/A Com 800 MHZ EDACS
trunked radio system. The system is a 10 freq system, and will be
linked with Ocean City's current EDACS system.
The system will be combined digital and analog, with it mostly being used
in analog mode. There will be many talk groups and the all government
agencies
in Worcester Co (PD, FD, EMS, Pub Works) will be on the system with
exception of Pocomoke City Pub works and Snow Hill town Pub Works, and MD
SHA. This system will include MSP Berlin.
I will post the LCN and as many Id's as I can figure out just as soon as we
are online. I am very familiar with the system, as I am on the FD's radio
comitee to assist the Co with the setup
of the system.
=============================
Ken Austin reported:
Pocomoke City PD has now switched to a Ericsson(EDACS) trunking system. The
frequencies are as follows in logical numbering:
855.9625, 856.4625, 857.4625, 857.7125, 858.4625, 858.7125, 859.4625,
859.7125, 860.4625, 860.7125.
and Chris Larmore replied:
This is partially true....Actually the whole Co will be switching to this
system....will keep you updated
....will be in the next few weeks

Yep, Metro Traffic in the DC area is indeed on 455.9125, and I think the
PL is 141.3. I listen to them quite frequently on my way to/from
Riverdale, where I work.
I'd also keep the SHA frequencies handy, especially when the sxxx (notice
I blanked out the word- no sense causing a panic- just yet :.)) starts
flying. Eric Carlson's Montgomery county page has an excellant summary of
these freqs- just do a search when you bring the page up. The link is on
the CHM Maryland page, under the conventional frequencies listing.
In addition, I think that page also has a few freqs for other traffic
reporters; and a little tidbit; 122.75 is where you'll find a lot of the
fixed
wing aircraft (helos and smaller planes) occasionally talk among themselves,
particularly on a major incident.

All,
1. In the 1200 hour (EST) Activities Baltimore worked (157.15 & 157.175)

boarding
a commercial crabbing boat for inspection. It appeared that the crabber was
operating in prohibited waters.
2. In the 1300 hour Station Curtis Bay (157.175) worked w/auxiliary craft

All,
Today, while doing a band scan of the Coast Guard LANT freqs I ran across
MSP
medevac helo (Trooper 2) working with Engine 401 on 154.34 (no PL noted) as
they coordinated an LZ for Trooper 2.
Later on, this freq appeared to be used by a Fire Dispatcher. I couldn't
tell which area he was located in but I'm guessing somewhere in Baltimore
County.
