About headphones & noisy areas:
I have seats in the nosebleed area at FedEx. Sneider runs PA horns at an
astonishingly thunderous volume, whereby he pumps ads out at about 5/min.
It's truly disgusting.
Anyway, I have a David Clark stereo headset, built on their hard-shell
sound-attentuating aviation model (mechanical attentuation only). The
attenuation is 25 db when the cups are set at max head clamping. I was
using a Sony Walkman. I could hear the output quite well. But to hear it
even better, I stuck a pair of ear buds in the 2d Walkman output and
slipped them inside the Clarks. Then I could hear REALLY well. to make it
interesting, I also used disposable ear plugs (another 20 or so dB) that I
got from Atlantic Guns in Rockville. The result of all that was that I
could not hear the people next to me talking, but I heard the radio
perfectly. HOWEVER, I could STILL hear that d------d Sneider loudspeaker.
The salesman at Atlantic said that the sound enters through the nasal
passages and the bones.
I think one could also use cup type hearing protectors (23 dB from Clark) &
earbuds inside them. I have those, but decided to use the stereo headset
instead.
I don't know if the Bose noise canceller would work better. It is VERY
expensive. Also it has competitors. Thdere are reviews on the web (don't
remember exactly where).

Would headphones designed for shooting (think of an indoors shooting
range) work? I am wondering if they would fit over a pair of
Walkman-style headphones. The Walkman-type headphones would bring in the
audio from the scanner, while the shooting headphones would block the
ambient sounds. Awkward, but effective.

You mean ear-buds type of headphones? Don't think they put out enough
sound. You'd have to use headsets with a band as the shooting muffs
would dig them into your head.
The Radio Shack headsets they sell for this worked great for me at
Dover. I used a Yaesu VR-500 and a "Y" adapter to drive 2 RS high noise
headsets. The variable volume on them lets each person adjust then they
way they like. The VR-500 drove them with more than enough audio.

I stand to be corrected so thrash me with a discone, it was a B-17 not a
B-29 but it really was the B-17 that got stuck in the mud. From
Dinwiddie/Petersburg the B-17 and the B-24 are scheduled to go to
Martinsville, Virginia, Blue Ridge Airport .

I have monitored many NASCAR races since the introduction of Uniden's 16
channel hand-held and that goes back a few years. One thing sure you need a
good set of noise reduction headphones. With a stock scanner antenna don't
be surprised at lots of intermod. With 40 + race teams and 10 or more
radios
to a team and then the media and track operarions, that is a lot of
communications. In many cases the scanner receives very well with the
antenna removed and not using an antenna at all.
Then comes the $12.00 Race-Scan antenna-----save your money for better
things.
The race -scan special is merely a Type F to BNC adaptor with a zero ohm
1/8
watt resistor encased in silicone. Go to your beloved radio Shack and get
an
F plug to BNC jack (catalog No 278-251), priced at under 3 bucks probably,
stick in a short piece of wire about half an inch long and you have the
same
thing. As for frequencies, they may change from track to track. Some lists
even include the CTCSS and DPL tones and codes. An up to date list is a
must, these are availabe at the track for a nominal fee and can be found in
the scanner vendor booths.
Visit http://www.racescanners.com/ it is a race scanner site with lots
of info and many scanner supplies.

My headphones were designed for auto racing but now get equal use at air
shows, just didn't work well holding the scanner to your ear with F-18's
buzzing around overhead.

All,
Had some sporadic clear speech on 167.6625 (PL 167.9) during the day:
1. Had Unit 750 calling unit 1419 for radio checks in the 0800 hour.
2. In the 1300 hour had 750 asking unit 722 for 1028 & 1029 on a passenger
vehicle license. In this instance 750 was in the clear and the responding
unit was encrypted.

I could be sooo wrong on this one, but I think its that small pool that's
just below the US Capital Bldg. The side which faces the Mall. There is a
botanical gardens very close to that. I'm trying to imagine how a car
would
purposefully or even accidentally drive into that thing, so maybe I'm
wrong.

OK...I was close...sorry for the wasted bandwidth...check out this link.
Apparently, its up closer to the monument near the big reflecting pool.
http://members.aol.com/teichners/javacong.html
Now I can see how a car could make it in there. That's very possible and
easy to accomplish.

The surplus store your refering to is at 0 Prince St Alexendria. And if you
can't find any (don't know how likley they are to have that sort of thing)
Potomac Arms is on the top level of that store, your sure to find range
hearing protection.

Check out Bose noise reducing headphones. You can plug them into your
electronic device (e.g. scanner, walkman), and it also drowns out outside
noise using a technique where incoming noise is matched by an equal and
opposite tone to cancel out the signal together.

I have heard a lot of activity tonight on 166.925. it is definitely law
enforcement working in the DC area. I have it listed as ATF (from an
internet list somewhere) but it does not sound like ATF. They are
responding to LoJack alarms and also have a helo called Eagle One. Anyone
out there with a positive I.D.?
