I have monitored many NASCAR races since the introduction of Uniden's 16
channel hand-held and that goes back a few years. One thing sure you need a
good set of noise reduction headphones. With a stock scanner antenna don't
be surprised at lots of intermod. With 40 + race teams and 10 or more radios
to a team and then the media and track operarions, that is a lot of
communications. In many cases the scanner receives very well with the
antenna removed and not using an antenna at all.
Then comes the $12.00 Race-Scan antenna-----save your money for better
things.
The race -scan special is merely a Type F to BNC adaptor with a zero ohm 1/8
watt resistor encased in silicone. Go to your beloved radio Shack and get an
F plug to BNC jack (catalog No 278-251), priced at under 3 bucks probably,
stick in a short piece of wire about half an inch long and you have the same
thing. As for frequencies, they may change from track to track. Some lists
even include the CTCSS and DPL tones and codes. An up to date list is a
must, these are availabe at the track for a nominal fee and can be found in
the scanner vendor booths.
Visit http://www.racescanners.com/ it is a race scanner site with lots
of info and many scanner supplies.
