I thought we would have had more entries about the Amtrak derailment. Did I
miss them?
Can anyone tell me what fire department was responsible for that operation?
We're re-doing our preplans for Amtrak that goes through our area and I
noticed some interesting stuff from the news coverage.
Thanks and stay safe,

Subject: [Scan-DC] Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States
Hello List,
I recently discovered that the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land
Management-Eastern States had a presence here in Northern Virginia. It
appears that they are establishing or have established a law enforcement
presence in this area as well.
Does anyone know which frequencies they would use or would they use local
jurisdictions communications systems? Does anyone know how they operate out
west where they have a more significant presence?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

I was just watching WUSA-9 news. Their sister station in Baltimore, WJZ,
has a helicopter flying around Ft. Detrick. It seems that the FBI is
searching some dumpster at an apartment building. This is all part of the
investigation of last winter's anthrax attacks.
Does anyone have the pilot frequency for this helicopter, and also, the
frequency used for helicopter to news desk communications?
Thanks,
Bill

All,
Over the last couple of days there have been a couple of interesting Middle
East VIP flights into my area:
1. On Tues evening HZ AFA2 a Challenger (CL 604) from the SAUDI ROYAL
FLIGHT
flew into Baltimore-Washington International. I'm guessing that he was
carrying someone from the Saudi Royal family into Baltimore for some medical
treatment--probably at Johns Hopkins. There was no fanfare or ceremony noted
with his arrival at BWI.
2. Early Thurs afternoon Jordanian 001 (id as heavy) departed from Andrews
AFB bound for home. In the past Jordanian 001 has been an A-340 (JY ABH)
used
by Jordan's King Abdullah.

Actually, CL604 HZ-AFA2 is operated by Tuwaiq International Co. and not the
Saudi Royal Flight.
2. Early Thurs afternoon Jordanian 001 (id as
Jordanian 001 is confirmed as A340 JY-ABH.
I hope this helps!

Tony,
Thanks for correcting that info. Will change my listing. Tought it strange
that the aircraft went straight to the Signature terminal with no fanfare.

Subject: [Scan-DC] First Friday of the Month - Critical Mass
There was an article in the "Style" section of Wednesday's _Washington
Post_ that discussed the use of cellphones to assemble a crowd, a
technique the _Post_ says is called "swarming."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A23395-2002Jul30.html
>>
Cell Biology
By Joel Garreau
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, July 31, 2002; Page C01
At the University of St. Andrews, where he studies art history, the royal
hottie Prince William can't even go out for drinks with friends without
being tracked electronically by a pack of wired women.
....
Chalk up another life changed by "swarming," a behavior that is
transforming social, work, military and even political lives worldwide,
especially among the young. It is the unintended consequence of people,
cell phones in hand, learning that they can coordinate instantly and
leaderlessly.
....
<<
The article says that not only the World Bank protesters use swarming,
but the bicycle advocacy group Critical Mass as well. And guess what -
Critical Mass's monthly traffic jam, usually held on the first Friday of
the month, will probably happen this evening.
>>
....
In Washington, mobile-mediated swarms are regular highlights of the World
Bank and International Monetary Fund protests. "I don't want to give away
all our tricks," says Eidinger, the political activist. "But wireless
plays a huge role."
That includes everything from little "Family Pack" communicators from
Radio Shack on up to sophisticated channel-skipping radios that are not
easily monitored, all of which are used by "flying squads" to respond
quickly to unanticipated opportunities. Cell phones are in constant use
by lawyers seeking court orders designed to complicate the lives of the
authorities as the protest is still evolving.
Swarming is also the hallmark of the Critical Mass smart mobs on bicycles
that clog Washington streets the first Friday of most months, protesting
the effects of the automobile.
"The people up front and the people in back are in constant
communication, by cell phone and walkie-talkies and hand signals," says
Eidinger. "Everything is played by ear. On the fly, we can change the
direction of the swarm -- 230 people, a giant bike mass. That's why the
police have very little control. They have no idea where the group is
going."
....

Happy listening.

Rumor is traffic management has switched to the 800 system this morning.
They may still be using the VHF channels as well. Fire/Rescue has not
really
started training it's people on it yet so it will still be a while for them.

All,
News byte last showed showed Jordan's King Abdullah meeting with "W" earlier
in the day (Thurs) at the White House. According to the sound byte. Abdullah
was here trying to convince "W" that it would be big mistake to attack Iraq
before settling the current Palestinian Israeli problems. Hope he
succeeded.

I've heard on good authority that the fire/rescue radio training starts
August 26th and will last for 4 weeks. All career and volunteer
personnel are required to complete 12 hours of radio training for the
new system.

Because of the weather I'm picking up a skip on 460.600 which should be
Fairfax FD 4B. I'm picking up fire operations but can't determine the
jurisdiction. Command 5 is working with a number of units with 5xx
designations. I'm guessing a Maryland location I think near Edgewood. Is
there a Port Deposit somewhere?

Port Deposit is in Maryland, and I think it's at the southern end of PG
County,
on the Potomac.
