All,
In the mid 1100 hour (EDT) some hackles were raised on some heads at Andrews.
There was a ramp freeze in effect at the time for Air Force 1's arrival, when
Andrews tower (118.4) informed the US Park Police helo (Eagle 1) that they
had a target, which appeared to be a helo, orbiting just off the Wash DC
Beltway (not too far from Andrews).
Eagle 1, which had been doing airspace security as part of the ramp freeze,
offered to go to the area and try to locate the target. Eagle 1 switched over
to Washington area helo unicom (120.75) and checked with the controller (not
heard). After a few seconds Eagle 1 told the controller that he would stay in
the Andrews area but that if he needed him to identifiy the target he could
be reached via Andrews tower.
At that same time a couple of DC CAP fighters (Gators, Shaw F-16s) were
chatting on 324.0 and had been alerted to the possible helo orbiting off of
the Beltway.
Nothing more was noted until the late 1100 hour when Air Force 1 landed
without incident at Andrews.
