We always had this debate in the United Kingdom when the first repeaters
were built etc..
But (certainly in the in the UK anyhow) you have to remember the primary
reason for the granting of Amateur radio frequencies was to support "self
learning" in radio and telecommunications techniques.. it wasn't meant to be
just a free means of communicating with your mates. There is CB, or email or
sat phones etc all designed to do that. So I feel that this is IRLP, like
the early days of the packet network, are some great ways for people to
experiment and learn new things.

I think this whole idea of 2 meter ham internet linkage is a bad one. It
basically takes away the fun from HAM radio. The IRLP is basically a fancy
version of a cell phone network. Why not just use cell phones or email?
And if someone wants to communicate such great distances so badly, then they
should consider HF HAM, instead of screwing up the 2 meter band that is
meant to stay local.
