The lid level on both the GB and the TM is frightening

TM13COL was on 18.160 working simplex.  When I first heard him he was calling
for eights, then he went to nines.  He called for sevens, worked one and went to
zeros.  I went away for awhile. When I came back he was working split, saying he
was listening up 5 to 10.  Up 5 is marginal, with only 3 kHz of legal BW.  Some
fools called up 10, out of the band.  However, half of the callers stayed on his
QRG despite the cops yelling Up Up.

I don't have a resonant antenna for 17 so I use a tuner on my tribander.  To
save the tuner, I reduce power to 200-250 watts, so I'm not very competitive.
The pileup was daunting even split, so I gave up again.  A bit later I came back
and he was simplex again, someone had told him his split was a bad idea.  Still
no joy.  Up popped an OTH radar or something similar and wiped him out.  But I
did sort of heard him say 18.150, so I moved there.  A few other good ops heard
him too and beat me for a few calls, but I finally worked him.  Sure a lot of
effort to work France, when I already worked him on CW.

GB13COL should have been workable on 20 FT8, but once again lids wiped him out.
I worked ZY0FUN and called it a day.

> Excellent idea, A.J. Waiting until Tuesday is probably the best way to get GB13COL. It is a madhouse today, and their signal is a bit weak here. Working split with a 10 kHz range would speed things up a bit. Tuesday will be here soon enough. At least I heard it this year. Happy Independence Day everyone! Carl KB7AZ Sent from my HAL 9000
