IIRC, at the time I got my Extra the vanity program was set to go away.  At that 
time you sent your forms to Long Beach. The inspector brought them with him when 
he came to Tucson to give the exam.  He took them back to Long Beach and they 
sent them to Gettysburg,   I had requested W7WS, K7WS or N7WS.  Who know how 
many people had checked the forms without issue, nevertheless they sent the form 
back wanting me to sign my full name, instead of my initials and last name, 
which was how I always signed.  On the form, W7WS and K7WS were lined out and 
N7WS was circled in red pencil.  (remember no Internet in those days to check 
availability of calls)

So my assumption was that I would receive N7WS.  I sent the form back.  Imagine 
my surprise when I got my new license with my old call.  By this time the vanity 
call program had been suspended and I thought my goose was cooked.  So I wrote 
my U.S. Senator, K7UGA.  I got back a letter from him (his office) telling me to 
resubmit and he was "pretty sure" that I would get my call.  I think I still 
have that letter someplace.
