I want to thank everyone who responded to my inquiry regarding whether we should start holding in-person meetings starting in May. I received several thoughtful replies expressing a wide range of opinions.
In general, replies ranged in the following groups:
Wait for another month or two before meeting in person.
Start meeting in person, with no restrictions.
If masks are required or there are other restrictions, I would not attend.
Based on the range of responses earlier this week I contacted the Pima County Health Department to discuss our situation and to get their recommendation. They asked if they could get back to me after the release of new CDC guidelines that were expected on Tuesday. I received a callback from the County this morning and I would like to share their recommendation with you.
In summary, based on what our meeting attendance and place might be like, with between 10 and 20 attendees, indoors, in a private meeting room with unknown air circulation and ventilation, no requirement for wearing masks and, unknown ability to maintain appropriate recommendation for separation between attendees and, given the current continuing circulation of the virus in Pima County, they would recommended against resuming in-person dinner meeting for the club this month. They recommend considering an outdoor venue, but still being cautious particularly because of the predominate age of our attendees and unknown rate of vaccination among our members. They also suggested the continuation of our virtual meeting as an appropriate alternative under the circumstances.
I followed up by asking when they expected their current recommendation might be relaxed and was told that if transmission numbers and rates of infection in Pima County were to decline then they expected there might be a possible revision late next month or in June.
Therefore, based on the County’s recommendation I believe we should hold off for at least an additional month before resuming our in-person meeting schedule. The May SADXA meeting will therefore be virtual again on Zoom. An announcement of the program and Zoom invitation will be sent out sometime next week.
Thanks again to those of you who responded to me on this subject.
