By inspection of the schematic (but not measurement since I'm under orders to
not mess with this until the heatwave is over) I'm suspecting the run capacitor
is leaky. This would allow the starting relay to energize. I'm not sure why it
would quickly deenergise and become an oscillator but clearly this is an LC
phenomenon so absent further troubleshooting, I'm running with the idea.
By serendipity Annette had something to pickup at 12:30 today about a quarter
mile from Grainger so I looked at their website for a capacitor. They had one
shown in stock, not the right size but the right capacitance and voltage
rating. So I ordered it, figuring I can make it work. They are using curbside
PU so when I got there the guy looks and tells me that the part won't be here
until tomorrow. Sure enough that's what it said on the paperwork that I was in
too much of a hurry to read.
When we got home I looked on their site to see where I went wrong. That part
was no longer shown in stock, but another better one (more $$) was. So I called
them up (800 number) and asked them to cancel the original order and save me the
new one. He said sure but when he came back to the phone he said that even
though it was shown in stock, it too wouldn't be available until tomorrow.
I'm sure glad this thing is still running.
