I was on the receiving end of an actual SOS. I was tuning 30-meters, which was
pretty dead, looking for beacons when I heard an SOS call from VY0X.
I wrote this to a friend at the time:
"On another radio note, I was tuning 30-meters last night and actually heard
an SOS call. VY0V is a call used by some folks to go to E. Pen Island (rare
IOTA) and he (or she) was calling for help. There is sort of a diary of
their earlier trials and tribulations on QRZ. http://www.qrz.com/db/vy0v
Conditions weren't very good between us so I wasn't about to try to call
them unless no one else did. Eventually VE7DP, made contact with him and
then VE7XF joined in. VE7XF seemed to have the better path and the gist of
the traffic was that they were out of water, gas and were very cold. As
time passed, condx got worse and W5GAI joined in as a relay station. He and
VE7XF QSY to 7009 to pass some info and thenW5GAI went back to 10107.5 to
relay. The rescuers were requesting that VY0V be prepared to shine a light
toward land, by that I assume mainland. When asked if they were hurt, I did
hear him reply, "No."
As of 1200Z today W5GAI is posting on the Internet spots that help will
arrive in one hour per the Ontario Police communications center.
I'm sure this will be in the amateur radio press when it's all over.
Hopefully with a happy ending."
There was a QST article about it. Search the archives for Oct 2010.
