Jim,
Being curious about 10m propagation nowadays, I studied your FT8 Contact at
about 0100z 5/9 UTC.
Since you were beaming over the Pacific, I looked at the Vertical RF
Soundings in Hawaii at that time.
LUALUALLEI,HAWAII SITE: foEs = 3.25 MHz, foF2 = 8.525 MHz, M=3.57, so MUF
was 30.4 MHZ - good enough for F2 propagation on 10m.
EsMUF due to Sporadic Es was about 19.5 MHz, so Es Layer did not block your
F2 propagation.
Basically, on 10m, assuming a low elevation angle of 5 degs, your best first
hop distance was about 4000km. Your best 1st skip reflection was about
2000km, or about 1200mi. Hawaii is about 1800 mi from Tucson.
It was interesting that the REAL MUF was above 28MHz (Not due to Sporadic
Es) in the Pacific. I am use to 10m propagation using Es, but NOT using F2
during this Low Solar Cycle. WAY TO GO JIM!!
You might get the highest F2 MUF user award for this LOW SOLAR cycle!!
Just thinking about what is going on.

Well, that was fast. I got this spot to you within 3 minutes of my
QSO. Now he's QRT.
