I did try again several times through the evening and finally connected aroung 0450Z. Pretty ragged, with lots of back and forth before the final RR73.
The significance to me is that over 50+ years of hamming I've done very little operating on 80m, at best some regional cw or Sweepstakes, or just being without an antenna for that band. Last year I noticed that I had credit for some 80m DX thanks to a contest or two and a lot of JA operators, enough to get four continents on 80. I put up a new, low (15-20') 135' end-fed and decided to try for the remaining two, EU and AF, to complete a 5BWAC. One down, one more to go. And it brings my 80m DX total into double digits!

Worked them last night on 80M about 0312 gmt. got a -13 but it was a
complete QSO anyway. Might be a bit early. His sig got up to a +5 at
one time but i still couldn't get to him, went down and then came up a
bit before i got connected. several DX stations have gone the same way,
high readings on this end but low on that end.
