Dave,

I agree totally with your KO7SS CW Skimmer analysis. My experience mirrors yours. 

When I am contesting, I set up the AR-Cluster to only give me spots from AZ and UT. This usually means spots from KO7SS. WA7LNW, or NC7J. I can work everything I see spotted. 

There are CW Skimmers all over the world. You will have no trouble finding one in your new location.

That may be true.  However, I have been very surprised at the similarity between what KO7SS could hear and what I could hear with my R8 vertical.  Surely not 100%, but close enough that it has been a real benefit for me as to what's on/workable and what isn't!  Perhaps the more important thing was that if KO7SS could NOT hear a station, then I almost certainly could not either!!!  When a DX station was reported on one of the DX Clusters I would often check to see if KO7SS could hear it, and if not, I would waste a lot of time trying to hear it myself.  It was pretty accurate!  I'll miss being able to use that skimmer.  Hope I find another one in my new QTH that is as reliable.

Bill, you'll need to take the KO7SS skimmer spots with a grain of salt. Just because they log a call doesn't mean that some of our members will be able to hear it.

I recently was over to Bill's place on Mt. Lemmon where he has the skimmer and the dipoles. The antennas are near the top of the mountain, about 45 feet above the terrain, and with the one I saw having a clear view towards Europe.  I don't recall seeing a second antenna but it could have been there.  The net effect of the extra work is that Bill's skimmer can hear some of the stations that he can't copy down at his QTH in the city.  So if somebody is well-situated, i.e., far enough away from the mountains that the low angled signals can be received, he should be able to hear some DX that others of us who are too close to the mountains can't even detect.
